AJK Group of Institutions celebrated National Dolphin Day on October 5th, 2024, in memory of Dr. R.S. Lal Mohan, a distinguished marine biologist and former Principal Scientist at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Dr. R.S. Lal Mohan, a pioneer in dolphin research, made ground-breaking contributions to the study of dolphins, shaping the future of marine conservation and leaving a lasting legacy in the field.
His remarkable work focused on river dolphins in the Brahmaputra and Ganges, along with marine dolphins, establishing him as a leading figure in marine mammal research. His contributions extended globally, including his work with the Dolphin and Whale Research Centre in Switzerland, and his authorship of several influential books on dolphins further solidified his reputation as a visionary in marine biology.
To further honour his legacy, AJK College hosted a special event that included a virtual reality (VR) experience for both staff and students. Attendees explored marine life through immersive technology at India’s first AR/VR Experience Centre in an arts and science college. This state-of-the-art facility was established at AJK College under the visionary leadership of Prof. Dr. Ajeet Kumar Lal Mohan, Vice Chancellor Convenor Committee Member of Bharathiar University, and Secretary of AJK Group of Institutions Coimbatore.
During the event, all participants took a pledge to protect dolphins and raise awareness about their conservation, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding marine life. This collective commitment reinforces the institution’s dedication to environmental stewardship.
Earlier, the Fisheries Department had proudly announced the discovery of a new fish species named in honour of Dr. R.S. Lal Mohan. The species, Lalmohania velutina, belonging to the order Tetraodontiformes, was named in recognition of his enduring contributions to marine biology. This discovery enriched scientific understanding of marine biodiversity and underscored the vital importance of on-going research in ocean ecosystems.
Through this event, AJK Group of Institutions reaffirmed its commitment to marine conservation and the advancement of scientific research, paying tribute to the remarkable legacy of Dr. R.S. Lal Mohan.
